In just two decades or so, there is no denying that orthodontic treatments have come a long way. The oral appliance used has also evolved, making both teens and adults who were initially against the procedure consider undergoing one. There is no need to wear a mouthful of large, unsightly brackets and wires since a better alternative has emerged – clear aligner trays!
Invisalign, a specific brand of clear aligner aims to straighten the teeth effectively like its traditional counterpart, but without the hassles associated with it. Knowing that the appliance uses a transparent thermoplastic material may set other people off but do know that the said material is exceptional. It is a patented thermoplastic called SmartTrack® that is durable and highly elastic to move the teeth to their proper places. Patients are assured that it has been approved by the FDA for it does not contain gluten, BPA, BPS, or latex.
For our patients at The Smile Company Dental Care, we want them to get the most out of their chosen dental treatments and procedures. So in the case of our orthodontic patients with Invisalign, here is a list of tips we prepared.
Tips for Invisalign Users
Do Not Leave the Aligner Exposed in Open Air
Doing so will allow bacteria in the air to accumulate on the aligners. It is also more likely for the patient to lose the trays. To prevent these from happening, make sure to use the case. If the oral device is left in the open area, rinse and soak them repeatedly before wearing them.
Never Forget to Wear the Aligners
Invisalign, being a removable dental appliance can be both a good and bad thing. Good, since eating and cleaning are more natural compared to wearing metal braces. It can be bad as patients should strictly follow the 20 to 22 hours rule every day. Forgetting its wear can cause a delay for the whole treatment. Make cleanings a habit after every meal to naturally remember putting it back on.
Clean the Aligners Properly
To keep both the oral health and appliance in excellent shape, patients should observe proper hygiene and care routine. It would be a great idea to thoroughly clean the oral device in the morning after waking up to remove the bacteria that accumulated during sleep. It should also be done at night before sleeping to get rid of buildups during the day.
Here are some other tips to follow:
- Change trays as advised following the correct set and order
- Do not use toothpaste and hot water to avoid any damage
- Try to speak more after wearing a new tray to adjust much faster
- Keep the teeth and other oral structures healthy by practicing proper oral hygiene practices
